Description
Ming Terracotta Dragon, Tang Period
Grey-bodied ceramic with yellow and green lead glaze. Measures 48 x 43 cm. A ridge tile modelled in the form of a stylised dragon with a flowing mane, prominent eyes and a raised snout expressing power. The creature displays fangs, scales and sinuous lines that traverse the architectural structure with strong ornamental dynamism. The yellow glaze, with green appliqués on the snout and facial details, creates an intense visual effect associated with Chinese ceremonial architecture of the Ming dynasty. The piece was intended to crown official or religious buildings as a protective symbol against evil influences and an emblem of imperial authority. The robust modelling and expressive energy of the dragon reflect the symbolic importance of guardian creatures in the Chinese architectural tradition. The work combines structural function and sculptural richness within a monumental aesthetic deeply rooted in the imperial imagination. 48 x 43 cm.
