Description
Amphora with zoomorphic handles, Tang Chinese School, 7th–9th century
White stoneware with a cream-coloured, crackled glaze. Measures 42 x 20 cm. A large ceremonial amphora with a globular body and raised neck, topped by two imposing handles in the form of stylised dragons biting the rim of the mouth. The composition possesses a powerful monumentality, reinforced by the purity of its lines and the sculptural presence of the handles, conceived as symbolic elements linked to protection and imperial authority. The weathered surface and the delicate crackling of the glaze reveal the piece’s age and enrich its material appearance. The Tang Dynasty developed a ceramic tradition characterised by extraordinary technical sophistication and great aesthetic openness, evident in the combination of functionality and ornamental refinement. This piece stands out for the elegance of its silhouette and the balance between formal austerity and iconographic richness. 42 x 20 cm.
