Description
Green-glazed globular jug, Chinese Tang school, 7th–9th century
Fine terracotta with a green lead glaze. Measures 26 x 15.5 cm. A large jug with a globular body and a wide, slightly flared rim, covered in an intense green glaze with deep reflections and fine surface craquelure. The vitreous glaze partially reveals the ceramic body in the lower section, where traces of firing and the characteristic reserves of Tang Dynasty kilns are visible. The rich green colour, achieved using copper oxide, lends the surface a luminous, watery quality of great visual refinement. The clean lines and volumetric balance demonstrate the understated elegance of funerary ceramics from the Tang Dynasty, a period of extraordinary technical and commercial flourishing in China. The piece conveys a sense of serene monumentality reinforced by the continuity of the glaze and the geometric purity of the form. 26 x 15.5 cm.
