Pair of Art Nouveau Sèvres, France vases, Frédéric Théodore Lix/Alfons Mucha Pair of vases in glazed porcelain and gilt bronze. 50 cm high. Good condition. Pair of lidded vases in glazed and gilt porcelain, Sèvres, France, c. 1900. Exported for the Austrian market. Art Nouveau decoration in the style of Alphonse Mucha featuring figures of ladies within a vegetal lattice, signed Frederic Theodore Lix // Alfons Mucha. Alfons Mucha ['alfɔns 'muxa] (Ivančice, Moravia, Austrian Empire; 24 July 1860 – Prague, Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia; 14 July 1939). Dimensions: 50 cm. Frédéric-Théodore Lix, born in Strasbourg on 18 December 1830, died in Paris on 23 February 1897. He was a French painter, illustrator and lithographer. Biography: Frédéric-Théodore Lix was the son of Frédéric-Jacques Lix (1804–1866), a commander responsible for organising the fire brigade in Alsace, for which he was awarded the Legion of Honour. In Strasbourg, he studied drawing under Gabriel-Christophe Guérin, alongside Gustave Jundt and Alfred Touchemolin, who became his friends. Then, in April 1848, the young Lix enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, having been introduced by Michel Martin Drolling, whose classes he attended, as well as those of François Victor Eloi Biennial. He studied alongside Paul Baudry, Jules Breton and Jean-Jacques Henner. He attempted to secure a scholarship to study in Rome, but due to a lack of funds, he gave up on pursuing this and, in order to make a living, produced drawings for periodicals such as *The Illustrated World*, *The Museum of Families*, *L’Illustration*, *Around the World*, *Le Petit Journal*, *The Picturesque Shop* and *The Great Lame Messenger of Strasbourg*.
