Description
Tantō in shirasaya with koshirae, Bizen no Suke Munetsugu, Japan, Edo period, 19th century.
Tamahagane wrought iron blade with koshirae. Dimensions: blade length 26.3 cm; width at hamachi 2.69 cm; kasane 0.89 cm; weight 295 g. Japanese tantō with shirasaya and koshirae, signed on the nakago with the inscription ‘Bizen no Suke Munetsugu’ and dated Kaei 6, December, corresponding to the Edo period. The mount features a tsuka and saya with a textured green coating, a tsuba guard, and applied metal decorative elements featuring oriental figures and motifs. The blade, which is wide and thick and of the yoroi-dōshi type, retains a simple copper habaki and a mekugi. It is accompanied by an NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certificate, which details the attribution and characteristics of the piece.
