EXCEPTIONAL VITTORIO DASSI SIDEBOARD FOR LA PERMANENTE MOBILI DI CANTÙ, DESIGNED IN 1950 – ITALY

In good condition considering its age and use. Overall dimensions: 130 x 190 x 45 cm. Vittorio Dassi (1893–1973). Vittorio Dassi was a post-war and contemporary Italian artist born in 1893. Dassi’s furniture, produced between the 1940s and 1950s, is distinguished by its use of fine woods such as rosewood, cherry, ash and walnut, often adorned with inlaid panels and glass signed by renowned glass masters. Elegant in design, yet without compromising on functionality, his furniture complements the refined style of Gio Ponti, with whom Vittorio was closely associated through significant collaborations after taking over from his father at the Dassi Mobili Moderni company in Lissone. Among the factory’s most important projects was, in fact, the furniture for the rooms of the Hotel Royal in Naples, designed by Ponti in the mid-1950s, a period that marked a turning point for Dassi towards more schematic forms and the use of teak for the production of modular furniture. In general, Italian modernist designers remained deeply attached to and influenced by their artisanal traditions. Yet their contribution to defining modernism was decisive, not least because it was characterised by a considerable degree of artistic liberalism. The aesthetic diversity within the movement itself was vast: pieces such as this 1960s desk in steel and rosewood by Gianni Moscatelli for Formanova appear to blend Danish and Dutch elements; Whilst the legendary Gio Ponti created designs in oak, mahogany and antler that exude an exquisitely Italian sensibility, Vittorio Dassi’s mid-century desks, with their contrasting materials and forms, illustrate another distinctly Italian modernist characteristic.
