Description
Four-drawer friar’s table, Spanish School, 17th century
Carved and assembled walnut with wrought iron fittings. Measures 124 x 60 x 94 cm. An exceptional, large-scale friar’s table crafted from solid walnut, featuring a generously proportioned rectangular top supported by sturdy turned legs and a frame reinforced with iron braces. The apron incorporates four drawers with architectural moulding and period metal handles, embellished with elegantly designed Baroque keyhole escutcheons. The composition conveys a sense of monumentality and balance thanks to the interplay of horizontal lines and vertical turned elements. The rich colour of the walnut and the patina accumulated over time accentuate the visual depth of the surfaces and highlight the nobility of the material. This type of furniture, traditionally associated with convents and stately homes, is one of the most representative styles of 17th-century Spanish furniture. The piece stands out for the solidity of its construction, the purity of its proportions, and the sculptural quality of its joinery. 124 x 60 x 94 cm.
