Description
Cabinet known as ‘El Escorial’, 16th century – Herrerian style, Spain, 16th century
An elegant 17th-century Spanish cabinet (vargueño), finely crafted from walnut and exotic woods. The drop-front reveals a richly decorated interior featuring lemonwood marquetry, numerous small drawers and a secret compartment cleverly concealed within one of them. The original wrought-iron fittings, bearing traces of gilding, remain intact, attesting to the cabinet’s authenticity and craftsmanship. The shelf on which it rests is a later addition. This type of cabinet was traditionally used to store documents and precious objects and represents the pinnacle of Spanish artistry and refinement during the Baroque period. Dimensions: • Overall dimensions (with shelf): 140 × 127 × 53 cm • Cabinet dimensions: 102 × 60 × 42 cm.
