Description
Walnut bargueño desk carved with Solomonic columns, Spanish School, 17th century
Carved walnut, assembled with wrought-iron fittings. Dimensions: 145 x 132 x 68 cm. A magnificent Spanish Renaissance-inspired bargueño writing desk, designed as a piece of great architectural richness and refined craftsmanship. The structure features an elaborate front comprising multiple drawers and secret compartments, symmetrically arranged around a small central pavilion with Solomonic columns and a triangular pediment, evoking the Plateresque and Herrerian styles of 17th-century noble furniture. Particularly noteworthy are the delicate geometric mouldings, carved panels featuring plant motifs, and the warm tone of the aged walnut, whose patina lends visual depth and historical character. The hinged lid serves as a writing surface and rests on a robust base with twisted legs joined by a carved crossbar, reinforcing the piece’s monumental quality. The meticulous carving, the harmonious composition and the quality of the proportions reflect the mastery of Spanish workshops specialising in state furniture, designed both for functional use and to display social prestige. This piece possesses a striking decorative presence and extraordinary aesthetic value within the tradition of Hispanic Baroque furniture.
