Description
ROBERTO FABELO (Camagüey, Cuba, 1950) – Sirena (2006)
Pastel and oil on canvas. Dimensions: 80 × 50 cm; framed dimensions: 99 × 69 cm. Signed in the lower right-hand corner “FABELO 06”. This intriguing composition by the renowned Cuban artist Roberto Fabelo depicts a nude female figure wearing a large, conch-shaped headdress, immersed in a haunting universe of organic forms that evoke fishhooks and marine elements. The work is an excellent example of the symbolic and surrealist language that characterises Fabelo’s body of work, in which the human figure is transformed through poetic and fantastical associations that oscillate between beauty, dreams and unease. The refined pastel technique allows for an extraordinary richness of chromatic nuances and a delicate gradation of light and shadow, whilst the composition demonstrates the mastery of drawing and narrative power that have established the artist as one of the most important figures in contemporary Latin American art. Roberto Fabelo, recipient of Cuba’s National Prize for Visual Arts, enjoys widespread international acclaim, and his works are held in major museums and public and private collections across Europe, the Americas and Asia. The artwork is accompanied by a certificate issued by Roberto Fabelo Studio. It is in excellent condition. This lot is held in an international warehouse (outside the EU). For shipments to the European Union, import duties and/or taxes will be the responsibility of the buyer.
