EDWIN HENRY LANDSEER (London, 1802 – 1873) – *The Highland Whisky Still* Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 63.5 × 76.2 cm. Signed in the lower right-hand corner. A magnificent Scottish genre scene entitled *The Highland Whisky Still*, one of the best-known works by Edwin Henry Landseer, a celebrated British painter specialising in genre scenes, animals and Highland landscapes. The work depicts a Scottish family gathered around a clandestine whisky still in a rural mountain setting, capturing with extraordinary sensitivity everyday life in the Highlands during the 19th century. The composition combines a profound narrative sense with a refined observation of the figures, animals and landscape, highlighting Landseer’s mastery in depicting human expressions and the natural atmosphere. The artist achieved enormous prestige in Victorian England, becoming a favourite painter of Queen Victoria and the creator, amongst other works, of the famous monumental lions on Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square. This painting is accompanied by a certificate issued by the Belfast Museum and Art Gallery and an invoice from Locati LLC (Pennsylvania, USA).
