Description
JOSÉ MORENO CARBONERO (Málaga, 1858 – Madrid, 1942) – The Broken Tooth Oil on panel. Dimensions: 30.48 × 48.26 cm; dimensions including frame: 40.64 × 63.5 cm. Signed in the lower left-hand corner. This intriguing composition by José Moreno Carbonero, known as ‘The Broken Tooth’, is a magnificent example of the history and genre painting practised by one of the great Spanish masters of the late 19th century. The scene depicts the moment immediately following a battle, in which a wounded soldier is being tended to by a comrade, whilst horses, abandoned weapons and other figures in the background complete a narrative of great dramatic intensity. Far from glorifying military heroism, the artist focuses attention on the human aspect of war, employing a balanced composition and an extraordinary mastery of drawing, anatomy and perspective. The precise brushwork, the brilliant rendering of light, and the meticulous landscape reflect Moreno Carbonero’s solid academic training, establishing him as one of the leading figures in Spanish history painting and the creator of some of the genre’s most iconic works. A professor at the Madrid School of Painting and a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, the painter achieved widespread international acclaim, with works held in major museums and collections. This painting is an excellent example of his extraordinary narrative ability and refined technical virtuosity. It is in excellent condition. This lot is located in an international warehouse (outside the EU). For shipments to the European Union, import duties and/or taxes will be the responsibility of the buyer.
