Description
JOHANNES BOSBOOM (The Hague, 1817 – The Hague, 1891) – The cloister of the monastery of the Order of Friars Minor (1866) Oil on panel. Dimensions: 14.5 × 11.5 cm; dimensions including frame: 37.5 × 34.5 cm. Signed in the lower right-hand corner. This delicate composition, painted in 1866 by Johannes Bosboom, depicts the interior of a cloister belonging to a monastery of the Order of Friars Minor. The scene shows two religious figures conversing in a spacious, dimly lit architectural setting, where light streams in from the rear of the building, creating a refined interplay of light and shadow that envelops the space in an atmosphere of profound contemplation and spirituality. Regarded as one of the leading figures of the Hague School, Bosboom achieved extraordinary acclaim for his interiors of churches and historic buildings, characterised by his masterful treatment of light, perspective and atmospheric effects. In this work, he once again demonstrates his exceptional ability to make architecture the focal point of the composition, using loose brushstrokes and a warm colour palette that accentuate the silence and monumentality of the space. The painting’s small scale highlights the artist’s technical virtuosity, capable of suggesting depth, volume and emotion with extraordinary economy of means. This work is an excellent example of Bosboom’s most characteristic style, highly prized by collectors of 19th-century Dutch painting. It is in good condition. This lot is held in an international warehouse (outside the EU). For shipments to the European Union, import duties and/or taxes will apply and are the responsibility of the buyer.
