Miguel Ortiz Berrocal (Villanueva de Algaidas, Málaga, 1933 – Antequera, Málaga, 2006) – "Lorelei", 1981–1986 Dimensions: 30 × 20 × 16 cm. Patinated and polished bronze. Numbered copy 132/500. This sculpture, made of patinated and polished bronze, belongs to the celebrated “Lorelei” series, one of the most renowned creations of the Spanish sculptor Miguel Ortiz Berrocal. Conceived between 1981 and 1986, the work encapsulates the artist’s characteristic style, based on volumetric fragmentation, the assembly of movable parts, and the interplay between sculpture, engineering and design. The female head, inspired by the legendary Lorelei of Germanic mythology, incorporates a detachable mask and an ingenious system of interchangeable elements, reflecting Berrocal’s fascination with transformable sculptures. This edition is copy number 134 of a limited edition of 500. It has one flaw: one of the pearls on the interchangeable mouthpiece is missing, a circumstance that does not detract from the quality or collector’s interest of the piece. Miguel Ortiz Berrocal is one of the most internationally renowned Spanish sculptors of the 20th century, represented in major museums and collections around the world, and is particularly celebrated for his innovative, demountable sculptures that blend art, mathematics and engineering.
