Description
David, after Michelangelo, Italian Neo-Renaissance sculpture, 20th century
Carved and polished white Carrara marble. Dimensions: 75 x 26.5 x 20 cm. A male nude figure inspired by Michelangelo’s celebrated David, conceived as an early 20th-century sculptural reinterpretation within the Italian tradition of reviving the great models of the Renaissance. The young hero stands in a balanced contrapposto, with the weight of his body resting on one leg and the other slightly forward, creating a harmonious interplay between tension and repose. His head is turned to one side with a focused and watchful expression, whilst one hand holds the sling at shoulder height and the other hangs by his side, emphasising the moment just before action. The anatomy, with clearly defined musculature and idealised proportions, is articulated through careful modelling of the chest, abdomen, arms and legs, whilst the hair is rendered in more incisively carved curls. The supporting tree trunk beside the figure fulfils both a structural and visual function, providing stability and reinforcing the vertical rhythm of the composition. The polished marble allows light to flow smoothly across the body, enhancing the nobility of the nude and the Classical equilibrium of the pose, whilst areas of rougher texture introduce material contrast. The work belongs to the historicist and Grand Tour tradition that flourished in Italy between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, intended to preserve and disseminate the most admired masterpieces of Renaissance art. Its formal clarity, restrained monumentality and overall fidelity to Michelangelo’s model give it a strong decorative and cultural presence, bearing witness to the continued vitality of the humanist ideal in modern sculpture. In good condition.
