Kneeling Venus, an Italian Grand Tour sculpture in the Neoclassical tradition, 20th century Carved and polished white Carrara marble. Dimensions: 51 x 25 x 23 cm. A nude female figure identified as Venus, depicted kneeling upon a moulded base and modelled on Classical sculptures as reinterpreted through the Grand Tour tradition. The goddess gently turns her torso and head, whilst one arm rises towards her face and the other falls naturally across her thigh, creating a balanced and elegant spiral composition. The crossed arrangement of the legs, the tilt of the bust and the subtle twist of the neck introduce movement into an otherwise serene pose, whilst the hair, gathered into an elaborate arrangement of wavy locks, reinforces the idealised character of the face. The anatomy is modelled through soft transitions, rounded volumes and carefully continuous surfaces that allow light to play across the shoulders, arms, torso and legs, heightening the figure’s restrained sensuality. The carving combines uniformly polished areas with more incisive work in the hair, fingers and facial features, establishing a refined contrast between smooth flesh and ornamental detail. The work is part of the historicist revival of Antiquity fostered by Neoclassical taste and continued in Italian sculpture produced for international travellers and collectors at the beginning of the 20th century. Its idealised form, the purity of the marble and the clarity of the silhouette evoke Hellenistic and Roman prototypes, reinterpreted with a decorative sensibility characteristic of Grand Tour sculpture produced circa 1900–1920. The piece is distinguished by its harmonious proportions, fine polish and serene presence, making it an appealing example of the persistence of the Classical tradition in modern Italian sculpture.
