Description
Triptych of the Adoration of the Shepherds with Saint Thomas Aquinas and Saint Teresa, Spanish School, 17th century Oil on panel. Dimensions: 145 x 96 cm overall. A devotional triptych centred on a central panel depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds, flanked by figures of Saint Thomas Aquinas and Saint Teresa. In the main scene, the Christ Child forms the luminous centre of the composition, lying in a humble manger and surrounded by the Virgin, Saint Joseph and a group of shepherds who lean forward in gestures of reverence, wonder and devotion. The Virgin, kneeling in a pink gown and dark mantle, gently directs attention towards the newborn child, whilst Saint Joseph holds a lantern that contributes to the nocturnal illumination. Above the earthly gathering, a celestial glory opens amongst the clouds, filled with angels, some carrying a scroll inscribed with the angelic hymn, thereby establishing an ascending connection between the human and divine realms. The left wing depicts Saint Thomas Aquinas in a Dominican habit, wearing a reliquary upon his chest and accompanied by the dove of the Holy Spirit, whilst the right wing presents Saint Teresa in prayer, crowned with thorns and accompanied by flowers and mystical attributes. The composition combines a clear narrative structure with pronounced Baroque theatricality, evident in the contrasting lighting, the tiered arrangement of the figures and the expressive intensity of their gestures. The treatment of the drapery, the variety of colours and the emotional sensitivity reveal the convergence of Italian and Spanish styles characteristic of Counter-Reformation religious painting, whilst the triptych format preserves a tradition inherited from the European Primitives. The work is distinguished by its rich iconography, spiritual depth and symbolic interplay between the Incarnation, theological doctrine and mystical experience, forming a devotional ensemble of considerable visual impact.
