Moses Rescued from the Waters, attributed to Francesco Curradi, Florentine School, 17th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 172 x 136 cm, unframed. A monumental fragment from a composition depicting the biblical episode of Moses’ rescue from the waters, focusing on Pharaoh’s daughter and her attendants following the discovery of the child in the Nile. The principal figure is seated and crowned, wearing a sumptuous red gown embellished with delicate floral motifs, whilst extending her right arm in an eloquent gesture that carries the narrative beyond the visible field. To her left, a standing maiden, draped in flowing ochre robes, tilts her head and raises one hand with a restrained expression, establishing an elegant gestural dialogue. A third figure emerges partially from the shadows in the upper left and looks directly towards the viewer, a device that heightens the theatrical dimension of the scene and subtly blurs the boundary between pictorial and real space. The composition is shaped by selective lighting that emphasises faces, hands and richly rendered textiles against a dark background, creating an enveloping chiaroscuro of pronounced Baroque sensibility.
