Portrait of a Bearded Man, Flemish School, Circle of Peter Paul Rubens, 18th century Oil on panel. Dimensions: 23 x 17 cm (unframed). A bust-length portrait of an elderly bald man with a full grey beard, depicted in full face against a dark, neutral background that draws the viewer’s attention to the psychological intensity of his features. The sharply defined eyebrows, penetrating gaze and slightly parted lips emphasise an austere and contemplative expression, whilst the beard, rendered with loose, curling brushstrokes, adds movement and tactile richness to the composition. Light falls chiefly across the forehead, cheekbones and facial contours, creating pronounced chiaroscuro contrasts that sculpt the physiognomy and reinforce its monumental character. The composition is based on a lost model by Peter Paul Rubens, known through several copies, and follows the Flemish tradition of the head study or ‘tronie’, conceived as an exercise in expression, character and painterly virtuosity. The brushwork combines areas of dense modelling with lively touches in the beard and hair, producing a vibrant surface closely related to Rubensian Baroque expressiveness, although this particular work is a later interpretation dating from the late 18th century. The work retains considerable visual impact through the power of the sitter’s gaze, the restrained colour scheme and the dramatic use of light – qualities that place it within the enduring influence of Rubens’s models in European painting.
