Description
Virgin in Adoration. After Perugino (Pietro Vannucci). Italian School. 19th century
Oil on canvas. Dimensions 53 × 38 cm. A devotional image of the Virgin Mary depicted in half-length, her head gently bowed and her hands clasped in prayer, enveloped in a dark mantle draped over a deep crimson robe embellished with delicate gold embroidery. A fine circular halo emphasises her sanctity against a tranquil landscape and luminous sky, reinforcing the contemplative nature of the composition. The harmonious arrangement of the figure, the refined draftsmanship, the idealised facial features, and the subtle modulation of light closely recall the Renaissance works of Pietro Vannucci, known as Perugino. The painting displays carefully modelled flesh tones, smooth tonal transitions and a finely finished surface that faithfully recreates the master’s Umbrian pictorial language whilst preserving the serene spirituality and balanced elegance characteristic of his work. This is a 19th-century reproduction based on Perugino’s work, modelled on the celebrated *Madonna del Sacco*, housed in the Palatine Gallery of the Pitti Palace in Florence, reflecting the renewed appreciation for the great masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance during the 19th century. The painting is a fine example of historicist art inspired by Renaissance prototypes, intended for private devotion and collecting, distinguished by its accomplished craftsmanship and by the enduring aesthetic and symbolic appeal of Perugino’s celebrated composition.
