Description
(ABRAHAM PINTO, 1976) CATHEDRAL. Oil on panel. Dimensions 120 x 80 cm. A strongly vertical architectural composition in which a monumental cathedral rises from a circular nucleus in the lower section, articulated through sweeping perspective lines, arches, domes and superimposed structural volumes that guide the eye towards the upper register. The building unfolds through a deliberately distorted and dynamic perspective, intensified by sharp diagonals, incisive graphic strokes and radial expansions that convey a powerful sense of ascent, energy and spatial tension. The treatment of volume combines sections of precise architectural construction with freer, more gestural areas, whilst the restrained palette of ochres, earth tones, blacks and whites lends the scene a solemn and spiritual atmosphere. The architecture takes on a symbolic dimension as a space of elevation, memory and transcendence, reinforced by the circular focal point below and the upward thrust of the towers. The execution is characterised by the confidence of the drawing, the layering of lines and translucent areas, and the integration of technical construction with expressive freedom, creating richly varied textures across the surface and enhancing the sense of depth. Stylistically, the work reflects a contemporary sensibility linked to architectural expressionism and the modern reinterpretation of sacred space, in which historical monumentality is transformed into a subjective, dynamic and almost visionary image. Within the context of the Contemporary Spanish School, the work stands out for its ability to combine structural rigour, graphic intensity and a symbolic interpretation of religious architecture, achieving considerable visual and emotional impact.
