Description
Walking stick with a curved handle. European school. 19th century
Polished bamboo with a silver handle and ferrule. Measures 86 cm in height. Walking stick comprising a reddish bamboo shaft, marked by the natural succession of knots and finished with a curved silver handle. The linear structure of the shaft contrasts with the wide upper curve, whose metal surface features subtle plant-inspired reliefs and a small articulated finial at the end – a detail that sets the piece apart and reveals a carefully considered functional design. The upper and lower ferrules serve to unify the whole, whilst the polishing of the bamboo enhances its colour variations and organic texture. The combination of an exotic material with silver fittings reflects the historicist and cosmopolitan taste of 19th-century Europe, which was open to incorporating materials from Asia into personal objects. The understated design, the visual lightness and the elegance of the handle lend the piece a distinguished character, representative of the culture of walking and 19th-century formal accessories. 86 cm tall
