Description
Neo-Renaissance bell with a warrior’s bust. Italian School. 19th century
Cast bronze, chased and patinated. Measures 9 x 8 x 7 cm. Handbell with a trapezoidal body and straight upper handle, decorated in relief with a central medallion featuring a warrior’s bust in profile, surrounded by vegetal scrolls, lozenges, grotesque masks and simulated rivets. The composition incorporates ornamental motifs from the Italian Renaissance and reinterprets them in the historicist style of the 19th century. The dense relief, symmetry and vigorous modelling of the motifs lend the piece a strong sculptural presence despite its small size. The warm patina and subtle tonal variations between the reliefs emphasise the richness of the textures and the depth of the chiselled work. It is a representative example of Neo-Renaissance decorative arts, in which function, iconography and technical virtuosity are integrated with remarkable visual effectiveness. 9 x 8 x 7 cm
