Landscape with a fortified bridge and travellers. Italian School. 19th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions without frame: 92 x 70 cm. Dimensions with frame: 108 x 87 cm. A sweeping, Italian-inspired landscape centred around a fortified stone bridge spanning a river, with crenellated towers, classical architecture and rugged mountain formations in the background. In the foreground, travellers on horseback and local figures bring the riverbank to life and provide a sense of scale against the monumental scale of the surrounding landscape, whilst a tree with sinuous branches balances the composition from the right-hand side. The succession of planes, the luminous horizon, and the alternation of architectural and vegetative masses create a profound sense of perspective, enriched by the symbolic value of the bridge as a passageway between nature, history, and civilisation.
