Description
Landscape with a fortified bridge and travellers. Italian School. 19th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions without frame: 92 x 70 cm. Dimensions with frame: 108 x 87 cm. A sweeping, Italian-inspired landscape centred around a fortified stone bridge spanning a river, with crenellated towers, classical architecture and rugged mountain formations in the background. In the foreground, travellers on horseback and local figures bring the riverbank to life and provide a sense of scale against the monumental scale of the surrounding landscape, whilst a tree with sinuous branches balances the composition from the right-hand side. The succession of planes, the luminous horizon, and the alternation of architectural and vegetative masses create a profound sense of perspective, enriched by the symbolic value of the bridge as a passageway between nature, history, and civilisation. The brushwork combines descriptive brushstrokes in the figures and buildings with a freer execution in the skies, rocky outcrops and foliage; the warm ochres of the stone contrast with the atmospheric blues and the chromatic accents of the procession. His style harks back to the tradition of Italianate landscape painting and architectural capriccio, revitalised during the 19th century by the Romantic taste for ruins, picturesque itineraries, and the evocation of an idealised Antiquity. It is a work of remarkable scenographic effect, in which meticulous narrative detail and spatial breadth converge to create an evocative vision of the historical landscape.
