Sacred Heart of Jesus. Signed. Spanish School. 19th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions without frame: 97 x 78 cm. Dimensions with frame: 120 x 102 cm. A half-length figure of Christ, depicted frontally and majestically, points with one hand towards the flaming heart crowned with thorns that shines upon his chest, whilst extending the other in a gesture of blessing and welcome. Two groups of winged cherub heads emerge from clouds on either side, creating a celestial realm that frames the serene elevation of his gaze. The symmetry of the composition and the triangular arrangement of the figure facilitate an immediate understanding of the devotional theme; the heart, the cross, the flames and the crown of thorns embody the symbols of sacrifice, redeeming love and the promise of salvation.
