Description
The Liberation of Saint Peter. Italian School. 17th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions without frame: 82 x 100 cm. Dimensions with frame: 88 x 113 cm. The scene captures the moment of Saint Peter’s miraculous liberation from prison: the apostle, chained and partially covered by a red cloak, turns in astonishment towards the angel who bursts in from the left and decisively points the way out, whilst a soldier remains fast asleep in the background. The proximity of the figures and the sharp cropping of their bodies create a compact and dramatic composition, reinforced by the diagonals formed by arms, chains and folds. The contrast between the radiant youth of the heavenly messenger, the saint’s ageing physique, and the darkness enveloping the guard underscores the triumph of divine intervention over earthly captivity; the broken chains serve as an explicit sign of salvation. The vigorous brushwork, the foreshortening, the sculptural rendering of the flesh tones, and the intensity of the reds reveal a fully Baroque conception, based on theatrical chiaroscuro and a highly effective gestural expressiveness. The formal language is linked to 17th-century Italian painting, in which Caravaggesque naturalism and monumental rhetoric converge to bring the sacred episode closer to the viewer. It is a composition of powerful presence, notable for its dramatic energy and the clarity with which it articulates the spiritual meaning of liberation.
