Description
A pair of architectural caprices featuring figures. Italian School. 18th century
Oil on canvas. Dimensions without frame: 80 x 60 cm. Dimensions with frame: 93 x 74 cm. A pair of oval compositions conceived as architectural caprices, featuring monumental porticoes, arches, columns and fountains of classical inspiration arranged in imaginary perspectives and enlivened by small figures. In one scene, a figure approaches a monumental fountain opening onto a triumphal arch; in the other, a seated figure sits in the shadows of palatial architecture, set against a luminous passage of gardens and ruins. The alternation of shadowed areas and light-filled openings creates profound visual journeys, whilst the vegetation softens the severity of the stone masses and suggests the passage of time. The careful articulation of cornices, capitals, reliefs and openings demonstrates a remarkable ornamental sensibility, enriched by precise brushwork and a range of atmospheric ochres, earth tones and blues. These idealised architectural forms belong to the 18th-century Italian tradition of the capriccio, a genre that blends imagined archaeology, stagecraft and a taste for picturesque ruins, in keeping with the culture of the Grand Tour. Their oval format and paired composition accentuate their decorative character, whilst the expansive perspective and refined lighting lend them particular interest within the realm of cabinet painting.
