Mahogany Empire sofa. France. 19th century Carved mahogany and fabric upholstery. Dimensions: 84 × 132 × 51 cm. Empire-inspired sofa with scrolled arms, an openwork back decorated with classical kraters and palmettes, and a seat upholstered in ornamental striped fabric. The archaeologically inspired carving and the symmetrical composition evoke the French Neoclassical decorative style that developed during the first third of the 19th century.
