Description
Carved and gilded devotional altarpiece. Spanish School. 18th century
Carved, gilded and partially polychromed wood. Dimensions: 93 x 69 cm. A single-tiered, single-section devotional altarpiece, designed with a highly ornamental architectural structure, featuring a central opening draped in red velvet and flanked by two pilasters with pronounced relief. The supports incorporate Corinthian-inspired capitals, shafts decorated with incised plant motifs, and stepped bases, whilst the upper entablature is articulated with dentils and superimposed mouldings. The openwork crowning element is composed of scrolls, acanthus leaves and a large central flower, arranged symmetrically to reinforce the upward-reaching and ceremonial character of the whole. The plant decoration enriches the surface and draws on the symbolic repertoire of fertility, renewal and spiritual exaltation characteristic of liturgical furnishings. The carving demonstrates meticulous craftsmanship, particularly evident in the depth of the openwork, the three-dimensional modelling of the acanthus leaves, and the interplay of smooth and textured surfaces. The gilding enhances the contrasts of light on the reliefs, whilst the wear and losses on the surface lend a historical patina of remarkable appeal. Its ornamental style belongs to the late Spanish Baroque tradition of the 18th century, characterised by rich decoration, architectural theatricality, and the integration of structure and ornament. The piece is a prime example of a domestic or devotional altarpiece, possessing a strong scenographic presence and considerable interest within the realm of religious decorative arts.
