Description
Calvary with the Virgin Mary and Saint John. Spanish Medieval School – 14th century Carved, polychromed and partially gilded wood, with some repainting and restoration. Dimensions: 51 x 12 cm – 65 x 57 cm. A devotional group comprising the crucified Christ, the Virgin Mary and Saint John, currently mounted on a velvet-covered base. The figures, with their elongated proportions and pronounced frontality, retain a restrained expressiveness characteristic of late Gothic sculpture, evident in Christ’s ascetic face, the linear rendering of the hair, and the broken arrangement of the folds in the drapery. The polychromy and traces of gilding reinforce the liturgical interpretation of the group, which was probably conceived as part of a Calvary altarpiece. Its formal restraint, the hieratic poses, and the narrative delicacy place it within the late Romanesque sculptural tradition of the 15th century.
