Description
Star Lot - Exceptional 16th-century South Flemish Master’s Calvary in Boxwood
Carved and polychromed wood, boxwood, rosewood, and inlays of bone and lapis lazuli. Overall dimensions: 74 x 64 x 21 cm. A sculptural group comprising the Cross with Christ crucified, flanked by the figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint John, arranged on a stepped pedestal with a striking architectural presence. The figures display carefully crafted, expressive gestures and a dynamic arrangement that reinforces the narrative of the Calvary scene. The rosewood cross incorporates bone inlays that visually enrich the group, providing contrasts in colour and material. The carving reveals a refined execution, with particular attention to the rendering of the folds in the drapery, the anatomy and the compositional balance, linking it to the circle of Juanitín Machado de Castro. The work is firmly rooted in 16th-century Portuguese devotional sculpture, where Baroque tradition and academic sensibility coexist in pieces of great spiritual significance. 74 x 64 x 21 cm
