Pair of little angels, European School, late 18th–19th century Carved and polychromed wood. Dimensions: 23 x 30 x 10 cm. A pair of child-like angels depicted in dynamic poses, one playing a flute and the other a stringed instrument, with outstretched wings and slightly twisted bodies, creating a sense of movement and lightness. The faces display sweet and focused expressions, whilst the polychromy, softened by time, retains traces of gilding and colour that enhance the sculptural volume. The modelling is delicate, with particular attention paid to the child’s anatomy and the flowing rendering of the hair and drapery. These sculptures reflect the decorative and devotional tastes of the late 18th century.
