The Flagellation of Christ. Chevalier d’Arpin, 16th-century Italian Renaissance school Oil on panel. The scene depicts the moment of Christ’s flagellation, centred in the foreground with his bare torso, his hands tied to a low column, and his head bowed in a gesture of resignation. Around him, several executioners carry out the punishment with expressive dynamism: one raises his arm holding a flagellum, another holds Christ by the arm, whilst in the background two other figures heighten the narrative tension. The anatomical modelling of Christ is carefully rendered, emphasising his musculature, volume and the twist of his body, in contrast to the angular gestures and polychrome attire of the executioners. The colour palette, subdued on Christ’s body and vibrant in the executioners’ robes, reinforces the emotional tension. The mock architecture framing the scene, with fluted columns and a semicircular pediment crowned by cherubs and classical elements, recalls models from the Italian Renaissance.
