Description
Wrought-iron wall light with plant motifs. Spanish School. 19th century
Wrought iron. An ornamental piece of artistic forging in the form of a large volute crowned by a spearhead, flanked by symmetrical scrolls featuring stylised leaves. The structure, which may have originally formed part of a lantern or balustrade from the Modernista period, presents a synthesis of organic plant motifs and geometric elements, characteristic of the decorative language of Spanish Modernism. The dark patina and oxidised finials reflect its exposure to the elements. The expressive lines of the iron evoke the influence of European Art Nouveau, with particular parallels to the work of the Catalan workshops associated with Gaudí. An object of interest for the re-evaluation of artistic metalwork from the late 19th century. 30 x 10 x 8 cm.
