Sculpture of a torch-bearing angel. Spanish Baroque School. 18th century. A wood carving preserved in its original colour. The figure of a torch-bearing angel is rendered with expressive tenderness, evident in its rounded form and serene face. Standing on a faceted base, the child holds a bundle of foliage culminating in a candlestick, with one arm raised, thus combining a practical function with sacred ornamentation. The rendering of the hair and facial features demonstrates skilful craftsmanship, whilst the movement of the body and the interplay of the legs lend dynamism to the composition. The vigorous modelling and childlike expressiveness are reminiscent of the Hispanic Baroque tradition, in which such figures were commonly found in altarpieces or as devotional candlesticks. A characteristic work of 18th-century religious art, possessing a powerful sculptural presence and ornamental value. Dimensions: 68 x 23 x 20 cm.
