Sculpture of the Virgin and Child. Castilian School. 18th century. Carved and polychrome wooden sculpture with original features. It depicts a scene of intense intimacy in which the Virgin tenderly holds the Child lying on her lap. The vertical composition is balanced by the wide folds of the cloak and the Virgin’s slightly tilted posture. The carving is meticulous, with particular emphasis on the serene faces, the textures of the fabric, and the geometric ornamentation of the dress. The colour palette of reds, greens and golds evokes the popular Castilian style of the late Baroque period. This type of image was intended for domestic or conventual devotion, reflecting maternal spirituality and the cult of the infancy of Christ in the 18th century. Dimensions: 85 x 50 x 31 cm.
