The Virgin and Child. New Spanish School. 18th century Oil on panel. Dimensions: 30 x 23 cm (45 x 38 cm with frame). The Virgin holds the Child in a tender gesture; both are depicted with golden halos against a warm background. The artist depicts the scene with delicate brushstrokes and intense colours, emphasising the contrasts between the reddish tones of the mantle and the greens of the veil. The frontal composition and serene expression are reminiscent of 18th-century Spanish American devotional painting, influenced by engravings and convent workshops. Period frame, carved and ebonised.
