Description
Still Life with Grapes, Fruit and a Jug. Spanish School. Late 18th century
Oil on canvas. The composition centres on a group of fruits arranged on a stone ledge, evoking the visual language of Spanish still-life paintings in the Baroque tradition. Two melons stand out – one whole and one halved – alongside bunches of white and black grapes, halved pomegranates, figs, a sliced orange, pears and apples, whose fleshy textures contrast with the shiny surface of a metal jug in the background. The harmonious and balanced arrangement of the elements, the nuanced rendering of the volumes, and the gently directed light lend the scene a quiet and contemplative atmosphere. The technical virtuosity in the depiction of the reflections on the jug and the transparency of the grapes reveals meticulous execution and a refined attention to detail. These characteristics are typical of the late still life paintings of the Spanish School, which combine compositional austerity with a naturalistic touch. The work forms part of the eighteenth-century pictorial tradition which, although influenced by Flemish models, retains a local identity centred on sobriety and the celebration of everyday life. Dimensions: height x width 104 x 77 cm
