Description
Immaculate Virgin, Goa – India – 18th century
Carved, upholstered and polychrome wood. A full-length sculpture of the Immaculate Virgin, rendered in the round, with an oval face featuring serene features, almond-shaped eyes and half-open lips that accentuate her contemplative expression. Her slightly turned head and restrained expression evoke an intimate and withdrawn spirituality. She wears a tunic in soft tones, richly upholstered with gilded plant motifs, fitted at the waist and covered by a mantle that falls in wide folds, rendered with a great sense of volume. Her hands are shown extended in a gesture of offering or welcoming, reinforcing the iconography of the Immaculate Virgin. The meticulously crafted carving focuses on the dynamic folds of the garment and the subtle rendering of the face, with a balanced colour palette of gold, blue and pink, typical of Baroque taste. The polychrome tempera and gilding visually enrich the surface and emphasise the sacred nature of the figure. This sculpture belongs to the 18th-century Spanish School, an heir to Baroque naturalism, with echoes of the Andalusian style evident in the gentleness of the face and the rhythm of the folds. Dimensions: 90 x 55 x 30 cm.
