Description
Antique Large Staff of a Tribal Chief or Shaman – African Art. Cameroon? 19th–20th century Carved wood. Measures 64 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm. A ceremonial staff with an elongated structure, carved from a single block of wood, featuring a succession of geometric forms and distinct sections along its vertical axis. The upper finial takes the form of a schematic sculptural motif, whilst the body of the staff alternates between smooth surfaces and subtle reliefs, revealing a symbolic and ritualistic formal language. The surface displays a dark patina resulting from use and the passage of time, which lends depth and authenticity to the piece. The carving, which is both understated and expressive, reflects the artistic traditions of various African tribes, where such objects served social, ceremonial or authoritative functions. It is a significant example of African art, valued both for its ethnographic significance and its aesthetic power.
