Antique Large Staff of a Tribal Chief or Shaman – African Art. Cameroon? 19th–20th century
Carved wood. Measures 64 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm. A ceremonial staff with an elongated structure, carved from a single block of wood, featuring a succession of geometric forms and distinct sections along its vertical axis. The upper finial takes the form of a schematic sculptural motif, whilst the body of the staff alternates between smooth surfaces and subtle reliefs, revealing a symbolic and ritualistic formal language.
