Description
FRANÇOIS DE HÉRAIN (Paris, 1877 – Paris, 1962) – Portrait of an Oriental Man with a Turban Charcoal on paper. Dimensions: 37 x 29 cm. Framed. Signed De Hérain. This Orientalist portrait, created around 1925–1935, depicts a man wearing a turban. It is characterised by a keen attention to physiognomic detail and the expressive intensity of the face. The work belongs to the later period of François de Hérain, a French painter and draughtsman associated with the Orientalist tradition. It demonstrates a restrained and confident execution, based on the tonal richness of the charcoal and a careful gradation of light and shadow that reinforces the psychological presence of the sitter. The composition reflects the taste for exotic subjects and portraits so characteristic of the Orientalist sensibility of the first half of the 20th century. This lot is held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
