Description
Wunda shield. Aboriginal people, Australia, 19th–20th century
Wood. Dimensions: 75 × 7.5 cm. Traditional Australian Wunda-type shield, carved from a single piece of wood and decorated with geometric zigzag incisions, with traces of red pigmentation on the reverse. This type of shield was used in both defensive and ceremonial contexts, serving a symbolic as well as a practical function. The formal simplicity, combined with the balanced proportions and the patina of use, reflects the close relationship between functionality, cultural identity and artistic expression in Australian Aboriginal traditions. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
