Shi ceremonial sword. Shi people, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 19th–20th century Metal and wood. Dimensions: 82 × 5 cm. A ceremonial weapon of great formal elegance, used in ritual contexts and to signify status within Shi culture. The stylised, elongated metal blade is combined with a wooden handle that reinforces the symbolic character of the piece beyond its practical function. This type of sword was associated with chiefs, warriors or specific ceremonies, serving as an emblem of authority, prestige and power. The simplicity of the design and the patina of use attest to its authenticity and its significance within the material culture of Central Africa.
