Frans Van Cauwelaert (1830–1980) – Bombardon prototype Metal. Dimensions: 99 × 42 × 99 cm. A brass wind instrument corresponding to an early prototype of the bombardon, made by F. van Cauwelaert, an instrument maker active in Brussels between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries and an apprentice of Adolphe Sax. The bombardon was a widely used instrument in marching bands before falling into disuse after the Second World War. This signed piece, which was never mass-produced, is a rare testament to the process of experimentation and technical development in the history of musical instrumentation, standing out for both its historical value and its uniqueness.
