Copper alloy weights. West Africa, 20th century Copper alloy. Dimensions: 9.8 × 9.4 cm. A set of traditional weights cast in copper alloy, used as measuring instruments in pre-modern West African trade systems. These weights formed part of complex systems of exchange and value control and often featured geometric or symbolic shapes. Beyond their practical function, they provide material evidence of the trade networks, economic organisation and metallurgical knowledge of the region’s cultures.
