Ritual dance puppet. Salampasu people, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 20th century Wood and plant fibre. Dimensions: 45 cm. An articulated figure used in the ritual dances of the Salampasu people, carved from wood and adorned with elements made from plant fibre, featuring a conical headdress and a mukinka-style frontal mask. This type of puppet was modelled on Chokwe designs and was associated with ceremonial contexts linked to warrior societies and protection rituals. The piece carries strong symbolic significance and retains its dynamic and expressive character, constituting a remarkable example of performative sculpture from Central Africa.
