Description
Gyè mask with horns. Yauré people, Ivory Coast. 20th century
Wood. Dimensions: 50 × 20 × 10 cm. A ritual mask belonging to the sculptural tradition of the Yauré people, characterised by the harmonious fusion of human features with elements from the animal world, in this case through the incorporation of two stylised horns. Gyè masks are notable for the balance between the simplicity of the face and the formal richness of the added sculptural elements, reflecting a high level of abstraction and aesthetic refinement. These pieces were associated with ceremonies and ritual contexts and exerted a significant influence on the artistic traditions of neighbouring peoples such as the Baule. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
