Description
Rare Fiji Mermaid. Europe or Japan, 19th century Mixed media. Dimensions: 90 × 25 × 20 cm. A composite figure known as a Fidji or Feejee mermaid, created by combining the torso of a small mammal with a fish’s tail, designed to resemble a mythological creature. This type of object was particularly popular during the 18th and 19th centuries in cabinets of curiosities, travelling museums and itinerant exhibitions, where it fuelled a fascination with the exotic, natural history and the boundary between science and fiction. Beyond its illusory nature, the piece is a significant testament to the visual culture and the taste for the marvellous and extraordinary that characterised the 19th century. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
