Sculpture of Saint Erasmus (Saint Elmo), French School, 17th century Carved stone with traces of original polychromy. Dimensions: 80 × 30 × 16 cm. A 17th-century religious sculpture depicting Saint Erasmus of Antioch, also known as Saint Elmo, martyr and patron saint of sailors. The figure, elegantly restrained yet powerfully present, retains traces of its original polychromy, which enhance the serene features and the vertical composition characteristic of French Baroque art. A work of remarkable sculptural quality and great historical and devotional value. Provenance: private collection. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU).
