Description
Mother figure with two children, Yoruba people, Nigeria, 20th century Carved wood. Dimensions: 41.5 × 14 × 13 cm. Yoruba ritual sculpture depicting a mother with two children, a symbol of fertility, protection and family continuity. These figures (Ibeji or Ere Iya) formed part of domestic shrines dedicated to motherhood and were venerated as intermediaries between the living and the ancestors. The figure is characterised by its verticality, the symbolic power of the pose, and the idealised features typical of Yoruba art. The surfaces display a ritual patina acquired through contact and the offering of oils during ceremonies. Provenance: private collection. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
